Key facts

What Williams said

Williams was frank about the problem. In his words: "I'm writing a movie right now, but one character is an ex-hockey player".

He said the team has thought about switching to other sports, but the character made much more sense as a retired hockey player, Deadline reported.

Background

Writing is not new for Williams. Before Heated Rivalry, he wrote and directed several short films, including Soakers, Buttons and Inside Augustine Mendoza's Quotidian Apartment, according to Variety.

The interview was tied to a new release. Williams spoke to Entertainment Weekly while promoting Yaga, a Canadian witchy detective thriller he stars in. Yaga premiered on Oct. 23, Variety said.

About Yaga

Williams has a double assignment in his new show. The Hollywood Reporter's review said he plays two roles: Henry, the missing 22-year-old heir of a fish processing magnate, and Henry's roommate Logan.

Yaga is an eight-episode mystery thriller based on a play by Kat Sandler, who is also its creator, writer and showrunner. It reimagines the Baba Yaga myth in a coastal town, The Hollywood Reporter said.

It is the first half-hour drama from Canadian streamer Crave, the home of Heated Rivalry, and it airs on AMC+ in the U.S..

What happens next

The show is moving ahead. Production on Heated Rivalry Season 2 started in Canada in August, Deadline reported. The new season draws on Rachel Reid's Game Changers novel The Long Game.

Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in spring 2027. New cast members include Justice Smith, Charlie Gillespie and Emily Hampshire, according to Deadline.
